The Middle East is a very volatile region, and Britain must resist the temptation to become the fire that fuels the flames by getting involved in another war. Iran is not our battle—no matter how many times some overly aggressive politicians and media people insist on it.
The UK is greatly known for a miserable extended track record of military blunders in the Middle East, from Iraq to Afghanistan, Libya to Syria. Every time, they lied to us that it was required, that we had a moral obligation to perform. And the results were catastrophic. Thousands of lives were lost, the countries were corrupted, and terrorism grew stronger each time.
At present, with the situation between Iran and the West becoming more tense, the same people are calling for an intervention. Alongside sanctions, cyber warfare could also be part of the solution.
Even bombings are being considered as possible actions. However, we must not dally along this same road to our destruction. What are the objectives? How do these actions benefit Britain? Who gains the most from the way?, Is it the truth?
Everyone agrees that Iran is an aggressive regime. Certainly, it is unthinkable that their support of militias, their nuclear program, and their violation of human rights be justified. However, it is not the solution that makes the same errors that we did before. If we decide to bomb the capital of Iran or kill their leaders, that would mean the invasion of peace there – in fact, it would be the beginning of disorder.
The UK should try not to make the same mistakes. Instead of collaborating with US hardliners or Israeli hawks, we should be the ones who go for diplomatic solutions. Thus, we can negotiate, strengthen the nuclear deal, open talks, and cooperate with the countries in the region to stop Iran’s aggression without the risk of another war.
The British people are tired of constant interventions abroad. They have witnessed the price paid in lives and money. This is not about being scared—it is about being sensible. We should avoid repeating the same errors.
