Two British men are facing a possible 15-year sentence in an Albanian prison after being arrested on suspicion of drug dealing in the country. The pair, who are identified as 22 and 23 years old, were taken into custody in the city of Vlorë after a covert police operation.
Officials are stating that the men were representing an international drug trafficking organization that was providing cocaine and other goods to the market. Albanian police found and confiscated a large stock of drugs, cash, and mobile phones during their raids, which are related to the investigation of the case.
This week, the suspects appeared before a court, where the prosecutors gave their plea for their continued detention before the trial of the case. They are facing 15 years ‘ imprisonment in case of a guilty verdict for this crime under Albania’s aggressive anti-drug law.
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that it is offering consular assistance to the men; however, it is not providing any further information on the ongoing legal proceedings.
Albania has become one of the major transit points for drug smuggling into Europe, and the authorities have been fighting against organized crime there. The country’s prisons are infamous for their dreadful conditions, with reports of overcrowding and poor sanitation being the main problems.
