They will always remain clear memories in my mind.
As part of the 10th year high school reunion occasion, however, each person shares their glam jobs—from technology entrepreneurs to lawyers up to a minor celebrity. Until it was my turn.
“What do you do these days?” someone asked me over a glass of champagne.
I shrugged. “Well… I milk cows.”
And all hell broke loose. Some people were stifling giggles. One guy even patted my back as if I had told a good joke.
“Seriously?” smirked Jessica-from-homeroom. “You went to college for that?”
I just smiled. “Yep.”
Then Came the Moment That Changed Everything
Later that evening, the DJ’s music stopped. Suddenly, the lights began to flicker. The open bar ran dry, and the crowd grew restless-reunion magic fading fast.
That was when the host made an announcement.
Uh, folks … the caterer has canceled, there’s going to be no dessert.
A collective groan.
Then inspiration struck.
“I have an idea,” I said, rolling up my sleeves.
Twenty minutes later, I came back with a tray of fresh, creamy… homemade ice cream.
“Wait… you made this? Here?!” gasped someone.
Grinning, I said, “Turns out knowing how to milk a cow comes in handy.”
The thing they would use for ridicule burned into the biggest and brightest feature of the night.
And suddenly, I was the ‘it’ person at the reunion.
- Even the finance bros beg for seconds.
- “My ‘organic dairy secrets,” questioned the yoga instructor, “What are they?”
- Even Jessica-from-homeroom sheepishly admitted, “Okay, this is awesome.”
But at the end of the night, those gales of laughter had ceased.
But the moral is: Don’t ever underestimate real skills.
In a society that constantly focuses on going viral as well as having impressive titles, it is often the most elementary skills, the ones that sustain life, that are most valuable.
So the next time someone sneers at your skill, be patient.
Your moment will come.
And when it does…bring ice cream.
