As she was sorting out laundry, the edge of her phone beeped with an unknown number. Something in me told me to pick up.
“Alice?”
That voice. After twenty years, I recognized it instantly. My hands were shaking.
“Dad?”
He coughed weakly, then fell silent. When he finally spoke, his words came out so labored that each word cost him dearly.
“I’m dying. And before I die, I need to get the truth out to you.”
The room spun. What truth? What possible truth could turn around twenty years of abandonment?
Then he said the words that rewrote my past.
“Your grandfather paid me to leave. He said… he said you’d have a better life without me.”
I sank onto the bed, the phone was pressed against my ear like a lifeline. All these years, I hated him for abandoning me, but now he had just told me that he had been pushed.
“I watched your volleyball games from the parking lot,” he whispered. “I have every report card, every school photo…”
Tears blurred my vision. He’d been there all along, just out of sight.
“The hospital, ¬took like antiseptic and regret”. My father had nothing to resemble the strong man from my childhood memories. His skin was thin as a sheet of paper, and his breathing could not be said to be deep.
“The letters,” he gasped, he into my hands. “Under the floorboards…. our old house….”
After the funeral, I pried up the loose board in my childhood bedroom. Dozens of yellowing envelopes tumbled out-sent birthday greetings he’d never remembered to add in, along with apologies he’d never uttered.
My mother crumpled when I turned on her. “We thought we were protecting you,” she sobbed.
On that evening, I spread the letters along the kitchen table. I doubt if this is the handwriting that shipped me to smile before. The scholarship fund got underway at 3, another way to turn his shame into someone else’s hope.
For there are times when the most hurtful ones can be those who have loved us most in their lives. And forgiveness may sometimes look like giving other children chances we never got.
