This text is a mixture of things I have heard and experienced over my life, relationships that have given me more insight into being single. These stories talk about everything from toxic dynamics to unforgettable betrayals that remind me daily of my freedom, happiness, and independence.
Let me mention a few that I can still recall very clearly:
The Overly Possessive Partner: My friend’s boyfriend not only wanted access to her messages and social media, but he also once visited her unannounced at her workplace. They were no longer a couple after she realized it was not his love—it was his excess of control.
The Financial Nightmare: A good friend of mine decided to get his family’s income together with his partner’s income, but unexpectedly found out later about the massive hidden debts and the very bad financial decisions made by the partner. Many years were spent restoring the savings to the original.
The Disappearing Act: One day, a person woke up and his partner had left their shared home without a word, and, to top it, off he had blocked him on all social platforms. Nobody heard anything; the person just disappeared.
The Gaslighting Expert: For years, a co-worker was told by the boss that she was too emotional and that all her worries were just her imagination. Only when she left did she become aware of the fact that her mind had been cunningly twisted.
The Family Feud: Can you visualize living with a partner whose family treats you in this derogatory manner, and your partner does not step up for you? It is terrible to think about.
These are just some of the stories I have and they are my unofficial relationship turn-off. I have them to thank for always reminding me that companionship is beautiful, however, it is not going to be enough to sacrifice my mental health, self-respect, or happiness.
