Ex-US President Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Italy before the scheduled time, just a few hours before the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was to come.
As a guest of current President Joe Biden, Trump was present at the summit but departed the gathering of world leaders on Thursday without attending Zelensky’s talk, which was planned for later.
The Ukrainian president was to deliver the summit a speech asking for more help to fight the war with Russia.
Trump’s early departure from the summit led to assumptions being made about him possibly deciding to be away while Zelensky was giving his address.
Having a turbulent relationship in the past, Trump has publicly attacked US aid to Ukraine and has even stated that if he were re-elected, he would be able to solve the war quickly through negotiation.
The G7 summit, which represents the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, has focused mainly on global security, economic stability, and continued support for Ukraine.
The coming of Zelensky was regarded as a pivotal point to gather more global support since Russia’s invasion is a long journey.
The fact that Trump has left also coincides with his preparations for a possible rematch against Biden in the forthcoming US presidential election.
Throughout the campaign, the “America First” slogan is repeated continuously, and the continuation of military aid for Ukraine is doubted and consequently given less importance.
The White House has not issued any comments regarding Trump’s departure from the summit earlier than expected so far. On the other hand, Zelensky will try to obtain more weaponry and finance as the Ukrainian soldiers will encounter stronger Russian attacks.
