The Canyons (2013)
A wealthy movie producer, Christian (James Deen), discovers that his girlfriend, Tara (Lohan), is having an affair with Ryan (Nolan Funk), the lead actor in Christian’s next low-budget B-movie who, coincidentally, is dating Christian’s assistant, Gina (Amanda Brooks). The four young Los Angelenos become entangled in a dark web of sex, deceit, and jealousy, as an increasingly paranoid Christian spirals violently out of control.
Directed by Paul Schrader (First Reformed) and written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho), The Canyons was widely criticized at release but has since gained a devoted following. Sleazy, cynical, and intentionally uncomfortable, the film offers a sharp commentary on Hollywood, performance, and capitalism that many initially overlooked.

Next up: Eagle vs Shark (2007)
Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, made his feature debut with Eagle vs Shark, starring Jemaine Clement as Jarrod, a socially awkward video game store clerk. He develops a quirky romance with the equally shy Lily (Loren Horsley) after she crashes his costume party and impresses him with her gaming skills. Their oddball relationship soon entangles Jarrod’s plans for revenge on his high school bully.
Awkwardly funny and charming, Eagle vs Shark is a modest but enjoyable first film from Waititi. It highlights the deadpan comedic style that would define his later hits, including What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. This small-scale comedy with a big, offbeat heart is a delightful, unique, and entertaining watch, anchored by a standout performance from Clement.

Next up: Maps to the Stars (2014)
This darkly comedic satire stars Julianne Moore as Havana Segrand, a troubled Hollywood actress contemplating a comeback by portraying her legendary mother on screen. She hires a peculiar young assistant, Agatha (Mia Wasikowska), who harbors a dangerous secret. Meanwhile, Benjie Weiss (Evan Bird), the son of Havana’s therapist (John Cusack) and a former child star, struggles with his own return to the spotlight after rehab.
While outwardly absurd and often darkly humorous, Maps to the Stars is a sharp critique of Hollywood and Western culture. Drawing clear inspiration from David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, the film explores the perversions and shadows behind the entertainment industry, anchored by Moore’s unnerving yet brilliant performance.
