Santa Monica police on Monday took into custody 20-year-old Plancarte, one of two suspects in the stabbing of a brother-sister pair Saturday following a beach encounter late at night.
The sister, 28, along with her 24-year-old brother and some friends, decided to go down to the water after midnight. According to the injured woman, who did not wish to be identified, the group had seen two men behaving suspiciously while drinking and riding scooters along the boardwalk.
“The guys were initially not a bother; then, they became very much aware that the guys were following them. At that point, the guys started making lewd comments, and that is when the brother stood up to protect his sister, his girlfriend, and their friends,” said the sister regarding their confrontation with the two men.
After things reached another level, the men allegedly produced slashing knives, threatening the group. The victims managed to capture some footage of the suspects, some of which was passed on to KTLA.
One suspect is in custody, and the other is still wanted; the investigation is still underway.
The sister demanded that the men leave them alone; however, the suspects lunged at the siblings and stabbed them, despite her pleas. The group then fled, and the two other suspects ran off.
Santa Monica police arrived 2 minutes after 911 was called at 2:26 a.m., finding both siblings stabbed in the 1700 block of Ocean Front Walk. The 28-year-old woman had sustained four stab wounds to her head, back, and underneath her arm. The brother, 24 years old, had suffered injuries from five stab wounds to his abdomen and back.
Both were sent to the hospital. As of Monday, the sister was now discharged and recovering at home, while the brother remains in critical but stable condition. She thought he would likely need at least another week for treatment.
On April 21, authorities arrested 20-year-old Ivan Angel Plancarte of San Gabriel on suspicion of attempted murder. He is being held on $1 million bail as police continue their search for the other suspect.
Meanwhile, the second man said to be involved in the stabbing of the two siblings at Santa Monica Beach over the weekend is still at large. The Santa Monica Police Department describes the suspect as a Hispanic male, thin build, last seen wearing a gray sweater and blue bandana/face mask.
That description corresponds to the video footage taken by the 28-year-old sister of the victim.

The first suspect, 20-year-old Ivan Angel Plancarte of San Gabriel, remains in custody on $1 million bail, charged with attempted murder. Meanwhile, the brother continues recovering in the hospital in critical but stable condition after suffering five stab wounds.
