The First Ever Communication Between Two People During Dreaming Has Been Successfully Established – The Working Principle Explained

Never have people in the history of mankind been able to communicate with each other in real-time while one of them was having a dream until now, when scientists have successfully demonstrated this concept. This fateful experiment, led by the Northwestern University team of researchers, pushes far beyond the frontiers of our understanding of dreams and even explores them.

The Experiment: Breaking the Barrier Between Dreams and Reality

According to the article in Current Biology, the researchers have called their innovative idea “interactive dreaming”. The team used workers with lucid dreamers—the people who just know they are dreaming and have a chance to make their dreams a good life. Its main task was the establishment of a connection between a dreamer who is asleep and a person who is awake.

How It Worked

  • Lucid Dreaming Induction: The participants were educated to be sure they are in the dream and to show this to them with some signs (left-right eye movement recorded with electrooculography).
  • Real-Time Questions: The researchers posed questions or math problems to the sleepers outside the dream.
  • Dream Responses: The dreamers replied, choosing the eye movement from the tones’ rhythm (e.g., looking left twice for “yes” or right twice for “no”). Some of the dreamers even sent the facial muscle signals as the answer.

It is to be noted that the respondents were able to answer accurately, even though they were still asleep, and then recalled parts of these conversations that took place in dream-time after waking up.

Why This Discovery Matters

The main result of the experiment demonstrates that it is possible to establish interactions with a person who is dreaming;  thus, a) the long-held belief that dreams are isolated experiences has been challenged, and b) the dreamer is not necessarily a dormant recipient. Possible applications may include a list below:

  • Dream Therapy: Talking to nightmares during the sleep of a person who is traumatized can be one possible way to treat the problem.
  • Enhanced Learning: You can be engaged in a dream as a second simulator, where mastering skills is still possible, or embarking on quests of complex solutions is feasible.
  • Neuroscience Research: Consciousness and the brain in sleep are areas of research that might be illuminated by new data.

The Future of Dream Communication

This study effectively opens the door to dream communication. Yet there are still some questions to be answered, for example, whether we can have more complex interactions or if it would be physically possible to influence or even to share the dreams of another. The authors of the present research plan to go further;  thus, this could be the turning point for a whole scene and the mind.

In essence, however, the dream world is not so far from reality as we thought it to be.
