A Texas State University student made quite the life choice after finding an abandoned newborn in a pile of trash: He postponed all studies and personal plans to adopt the child and give the baby a loving home. The boy was unnamed in the press.
The chilling incident started with the sounds of faint cries coming from a dumpster outside the apartment complex near where the student resides. He investigated, only to find an infant wrapped in a thin blanket and barely alive. The student immediately called emergency services, and the baby was taken to the hospital for doctors to determine if it had been born moments before being discarded into the rubbish.
He had not had any previous link to the child, but he was moved by the fragility of the infant and began the rather long and arduous process of making himself the legal guardian of the child. While future fatherhood might interfere with his studies, he was prepared to raise the child as his own.
“I couldn’t just walk away,” the student said in an interview. “This baby needed someone, and I knew I had the love and support to give.”
The new father has received support from friends and members of the community, from gifts to childcare and emotional support. Social workers and adoption agencies appreciate how selfless this mode of living has proven, calling it “out of the ordinary, yet inspirational in human nature”.
Indeed, the path lying ahead is not all that easy for the pupil and tends to test his resolve to forge a future as secure as possible for his adoptee spontaneously. His life serves as an episteme with a powerful message that family is sometimes defined by love and sacrifice rather than blood.
