A sleeping giant under the surface of Italy is giving some indication of reawakening, and the scientists are on high alert. The Campi Flegrei supervolcano near Naples has been active lately, and the eruption of a disaster of the extent of a global one is a significant concern. The experts think that if it breaks out, the result would be like that of a climate catastrophe stepping forth, leading to the destruction on a large scale and hence the chaos.
What Is Campi Flegrei?
Campi Flegrei is not like a typical volcano with only one peak; it is a vast depression, known as the name of caldera of about 7.5 miles (12 km) in diameter. It was the result of an eruption that was the most massive one in Europe 39,000 years ago.
That explosion sent so much ash and sulfur into the atmosphere that it blocked the sunlight for some time, thus a “volcanic winter” came into being, which might have been one of the reasons for the extinction of Neanderthals.
The caldera is the place where half a million people who live in the towns that are adjacent to it are directly at risk if the eruption repeats.
Warning Signs of an Impending Eruption

- Increased Seismic Activity: Shack of the Earth with hundreds of small earthquakes in the last years due to the release of pressure below the surface.
- Ground Uplift: The phenomenon known as “bradyseism” has led to the rise of the town of Pozzuoli by over 12 feet (3.7 meters) since the 1950s.
- Magma Movement: Researches indicate that magma is collecting near the surface, thus the chance of an eruption is becoming higher.
The scientists have not been able to come up with a definite time for the eruption or even confirm its occurrence; however, the ongoing unrest is similar to the times just before the volcanic eruptions of the past.
What Happens If Campi Flegrei Explodes?
An eruption on this scale could lead to the following list of very bad things:
- Local Devastation: The very near spot could be covered with pyroclastic flows – extremely hot gas and rock moving at lethal speeds.
- Global Climate Effects: The biggest eruption event at Mount Tambora in 1815 (which produced the “Year Without a Summer”) is a good example of what Campi Flegrei can do if it is not regulated properly. The volcano may inject so much aerosol sulfur and noxious particles into the atmosphere that the Earth will cool, in turn, changing the agricultural patterns and leading to food scarcity.
- Economic Collapse: Among the many hurdles facing the European economy may be the drop in economic activity resulting from infrastructure damage, evacuations, and trade disruptions.
Should We Be Worried?
To be honest, scientists in all their emphatic tones present the case that the volcano is not going to erupt tomorrow. Still, the possibility of such an event remains. The officials are constantly watching the volcano with utmost care and have even prepared evacuation schemes for the people living nearby in case of an emergency. At the same time, scientists are now on alert and keep reminding that the volcano is still active.
Such as this being said by one of the scientists is “we don’t have the information as to the exact time, but the signals are there. When Campi Flegrei becomes active again, nobody will know about it.”
