What Happened
The other day, a man (24M) and I (30F) who are very close friends turned our relationship into something more. At that moment, it looked like a joint decision – we both were in a relationship, and none of us seemed to be hesitant. However, on the next day, he explained that he was just worried about our friendship being destroyed if he said no.
His truthfulness made me even more confused as well as concerned. There was no point at all when I wished him to feel burdened, and I was honest in my trust that we agreed. The question for me was, did I see the situation the same way as he did? Or, on the other hand, did he start to feel the same way as me but failed to communicate this to me?

What’s Bothering Me
- Did I Misunderstand the Situation? I believe it is fundamental in the context of this situation to respect the other person’s will and communicate. Therefore, the notion that he did not think he was allowed to express his thoughts is extremely disturbing to me. How should I approach this issue in another way?
- Where Do We Go From Here? We are good friends, but now there is no playfulness, only awkwardness. I don’t want to be disrespectful towards him, but I don’t know if I should act so as to not exacerbate the already bad situation.
- Could the Age Difference Have Played a Role? He is younger, and I am thinking if this fact has made him uncomfortable when it comes to setting the boundaries that he wants.
Seeking Guidance
- How Should I Approach This Conversation? Is an apology needed, given that I was not aware that he was having those feelings at that moment?
- Has Anyone Experienced Something Similar? Not only were you able to fix the relationship, but it also did not change permanently?
- Is it somehow possible for us to restore our bond of trust? Not that this is the new kind of relationship that can never be changed, had it become so?
It would help me if you could give me some helpful advice, particularly if you have came upon the same experiences.
