So What Was the Backstory?
In 2015, it got to single mother Heidi Johnson, and Aaron, her son, was giving her nothing but attitude. This teenager had earned a bit of money via YouTube and told Johnson he was a “free person” and should not have to abide by her rules, not even those about doing homework. Tired of everything, Johnson wrote out a genius (and brutally honest) “roommate contract” to teach him about what comes with being an adult.
The Contract
The letter placed on the door of his room was a direct assault:
- He has to pay rent, utilities, and Internet, despite his self-proclaimed financial independence.
- He has to cook for himself; no more free meals.
- He has to clean for himself; no maid service is available.
- He has to buy back all his stuff, lamps, bulbs, even the bed- they were not free.
She signed it, “Love, Mom.”
Aaron’s Reaction
At first, he crumpled it and left. Johnson refused to give up, however, she began “repossessing” his stuff. When Aaron had calmed down, he returned, humbled, asking how to earn his rights back.
“It wasn’t about the money,” Johnson said. “It was about teaching him to value what he has.” Before too long, Aaron realized how little money he had for rent and food, and that his mother’s assistance should not be taken for granted.
