Amazon is betting big on its Melania Trump documentary, reportedly investing millions to secure the rights to her story.
The former First Lady has landed a lucrative deal, earning at least $28 million from a $40 million agreement with the streaming giant to license the film about her life.
While the documentary’s title and full scope remain undisclosed, it is expected to prominently feature her husband, former President Donald Trump. Given their 20-year marriage and her global recognition following his successful White House bid, his role in the story is likely to be significant.

The deal appears to have been in the works for quite some time, as Melania Trump was reportedly in discussions with top CEOs and billionaires about sponsorship opportunities during Donald Trump’s inauguration.
According to the New York Post, on the night of January 20, she proposed that executives contribute at least $10 million in exchange for a credit mention at the end of the film. Those who agreed would also receive an invitation to the documentary’s premiere.
Melania was also reportedly eager for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to acquire the rights to the project.
The $40 million deal is said to be the largest amount Amazon has ever spent on a documentary. Prior to finalization, a bidding war took place, with Disney offering $14 million and Paramount bidding $4 million. However, neither Netflix nor Apple participated in the auction.

An Amazon spokesperson stated, “We licensed the upcoming Melania Trump documentary film and series for one reason and one reason only, because we think customers are going to love it.”
The choice of director has sparked controversy, as it has been confirmed that Brett Ratner will helm the project. Best known for directing Rush Hour and X-Men: The Last Stand, Ratner has not directed a film since 2015.
Amazon has remained tight-lipped about the documentary’s details, only releasing a brief statement last month:
“Prime Video will be sharing more details on the project as filming progresses and release plans are finalized. We are excited to share this truly unique story with our millions of customers around the world.”
