“Jessie J grew emotional on stage while introducing a song inspired by her 2021 pregnancy loss. The 37-year-old singer broke down during her performance on Thursday, November 28, marking four years since she suffered a miscarriage, according to footage shared by The Daily Mail.”
Introducing her new track, “Comes in Waves,” Jessie J (born Jessica Ellen Cornish) grew visibly emotional as she shared with the audience that the song was inspired by her own pregnancy loss and the grief that followed.
“Today marks four years since I lost my baby,” Jessie told the crowd, according to video footage. “I don’t know if anyone’s gone through the same thing, but if you have or you know someone close to you who has you understand how really f**ing awful it is.”
She continued, “It’s something you can never truly prepare for. This song is for anyone who needs a hug. I hope it can help you the way it’s helped me.”
The “Price Tag” singer had previously opened up about her miscarriage during a May 2022 episode of The Diary of a CEO With Steven Bartlett podcast. She recalled the shock of learning in November 2021 that her baby’s heart had stopped beating.
“I remember going home and not really processing it,” she said. Jessie revealed that the most painful part of the experience was the overwhelming loneliness that came alongside her grief.
“I felt like I’d been given everything I’d ever wanted, and then someone said, ‘But you can’t have it,’” she said. “I’ve never felt so alone in my life.”
In 2021, Jessie J had not yet publicly announced her pregnancy after choosing to have a baby on her own. She eventually shared the heartbreaking news of her miscarriage on social media.
“💔 Yesterday morning I was laughing with a friend, saying, ‘Seriously though, how am I going to get through my gig in LA tomorrow night without telling the whole audience I am pregnant?’” Jessie captioned an Instagram selfie with a pregnancy test on November 24. “By yesterday afternoon, I was dreading the thought of getting through the gig without breaking down… After going for my third scan, I was told there was no longer a heartbeat 💔.”
She opened up further about her grief, writing, “I decided to have a baby on my own because it’s all I’ve ever wanted and life is short. Getting pregnant was a miracle in itself an experience I will never forget, and I know I will experience again. I’m still in shock, and the sadness is overwhelming. But I know I am strong, and I know I will be okay.”
After her miscarriage, Jessie J began dating basketball player Chanan Colman. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Sky, in May 2023.
“A week ago, my whole life changed,” Jessie wrote on Instagram Stories at the time. “My son entered this world, and my heart grew twice its size. The feeling is indescribable I am flying in love. He is magic. He is all my dreams come true, and he is my whole 🌍.”
