Jessica Leonard, like most Americans, was affected by obesity, a real epidemic that was responsible for 36.5% of adults and 17% of children in 2014 (CDC). When she was eight years old, she weighed 420 pounds, thus receiving the title of the world’s heaviest child. Her narrative illustrates the deepening health crisis as well as its promising solution.

Jessica’s overeating became so drastic that the resulting health issues made it infeasible for her to learn at school. The weight overburdened her legs, and hence, she was not able to walk; at home, she could only move by rolling. Her body, which was suffering from obesity beyond its normal capacity, was facing new battles every day, to which most children are not exposed.

At their Tennessee home, Jessica’s mother Carolyn kept the fridge stocked with her daughter’s demanded snacks. “She wanted to eat like every two hours,” Carolyn told Inside Edition. Thus, the condition of Jessica was aggravated by the continuous eating practice, which was like a vicious circle.

Her problem of breathing became the prompt stage of health deterioration. After her admittance to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, the authorities took the lead in the situation, and thus, intervention by Child Protective Services followed.

Officials planned for Jessica to be in a hospital in Virginia that is specially equipped for cases of obesity. At the same time, Caro Lyn was obliged to attend parenting classes. So, not only did Jessica get the reward, but she also got there in a hygienic and safe place.

Jessily burned off 320 pounds at the clinic without any surgical operation. The source of the change was the exploitation of a balanced diet and physical activity.

Back home, Jessica went back to school and continued with five therapy sessions a week as well as her mother’s meal plan under supervision. The routine she followed carefully enabled her to keep up with her progress, which was hard to gain.
Even though she still has to go through an operation to get rid of the extra skin, she can now live energetically without the restrictions she used to have. Having lost the weight of both the physical and emotional aspects of obesity, she has become a new person with the freedom of life. Her experience is the one that shows that change can be achieved through persistence.
