A man in a heart-stopping act of bravery saved a chimpanzee from drowning in a zoo in Spain. His way of doing it posed a threat to his own life. The terrifying event was captured on tape and shows that first the chimp accidentally falls into the water, and then, without a second thought about his own life, the impulsive hero goes in after him.
A Life-Saving Leap
The whole thing happened at the Bioparc Valencia zoo when a male chimpanzee named Nico, 38 years old, fell into the water in his enclosure. The fall from the height of one floor into the water made Nico show desperate signs of distress, calling out for someone to rescue him and trying but unable to get up by himself.
After one of the zoo visitors noticed the situation of the chimp, he did not have a second thought and threw himself into the water after he reached the fence. The kind-hearted man walked to Nico, swam him to the shore, and the zoo staff quickly joined him.
A Team Effort
The keepers of the zoo, with a very short notice, threw a rope to the rescuer who in his turn, made a knot on one end to create a lifeline that they both could use. The chimp was actually unharmed and only physically tied up in case of a very big shock and at the end was with his group again after the veterinarians have done some checkups on him.
Nico from Bioparc Valencia was abandoned by the man after the latter told him that, despite the potential for harming someone, they still do not invite visitors to risk their lives like he did; he was thanked for his brave effort, which the zoo officials believe saved Nico’s life.
Why Did the Chimp Struggle?
The chimp’s disoriented behavior in the water might have been the result of an unconventional swim, which can cause such effects even though they are skillful swimmers. It is more likely that Nico was startled or in despair, and he came very close to dying as a consequence of the accident.
