A family from Australia that is searching for a reason to continue living is making the ultimate sacrifice. All they wanted is to spare everyone the heart-wrenching pain they currently endure but not before sharing their tragic story that involves the notorious ‘chrome’ phenomenon and turns to be a lethal trap those who imitate it will eventually fall into, for a short while if they are not aware.
A Tragic Loss
Brilliant young Esra Haynes tragically lost her life while dabbling with chroming, that inhaling the fumes of toxic chemicals to achieve a manicure. Such acts are typical of young people eager to expose their social lives on the virtual stage, and are so dangerous that the victims may experience severe symptoms such as physical malfunction, suffocation, or even permanent brain damage, to name a few.
In the early hours of March 31, 2023, Esra took some inhalant drugs during a sleepover with her friends. She was immediately affected by a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. Despite the futile effort of being kept alive, the doctors took it for granted that her brain was irremediably affected. Her parent, Paul and Andrea Haynes after a few days, agreed to turn off the life-support machine which was followed by her death.

A Family’s Plea to Bring Tragedy to a Halt
Now Esra’s family is hoping that sharing the story of what became the cause of their daughter’s life will bring this big issue to the open and that more people will have knowledge of the subject and take extra care. A new page in their book of experience will be to let go of their daughter, even though they were still in the dark about her situation, and they are not only willing but also ready to do that to ensure that no other family will have to face a similar challenge.
“We don’t want another family to go through what we did,” the emotionally distraught mother cried out to the local reporters.
Moreover, Mr. Haynes has voiced and stated such: “Children overlook the effects of their actions. They believe they are the invincible ones, but this could be done in one flash.”
What Is Chroming?
Chroming is a process in which a person inhales fumes from household products such as aerosol cans, paint, solvents, or gasoline to experience a brief euphoric effect. However, the chemicals also create harmful effects, such as sudden heart failure, stertification, seizures, or long-term organ damage.
Despite all the possible hazards, the practice of chroming has been incredibly popular with teenagers, especially because it is related to the challenges presented by social media. Many times, authorities and experts in the medical field have repeatedly alerted one and all to the lethal risks, but similar cases continue to be reported on a global scale.

A Legacy of Awareness
In the name of Esra, the family is advocating for the incorporation of teaching about the hazards of chroming and other dangerous digital actions into the school curriculum. They expect the story of Esra to act as a wake-up call to the parents, the educators, and the teenagers.
According to her family, Esra was the personification of a beautiful spirit, who always had a smile on her face and was always full of joy. “We wish to honor her memory by saving lives,” the family members expressed their hopes.
How to Talk to Your Kids About Chroming
Experts advise the following:
- Confidential communication – Let the kids in on what huffing is, and shaming should be avoided in the process.
- Keep an eye on the social media activities – Be attentive to virally winds that can support the kids’ misguided inclinations.
- Recognize danger signals – Be on the lookout for a chemical smell or paint stain or any abrupt personality change.
Esra’s story is indeed a sad reality that reflects how a relatively popular trend can turn into a disaster. The message is straightforward, and that “If it is still possible, please, talk to your children.”
