Grey’s Anatomy fans have plenty of reasons to stay on edge after the season 22 fall finale and according to Jason George, the tension is far from over when the series returns.
In an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly, George offered a glimpse of what’s ahead following the intense midseason cliffhanger, which ended with Ben assisting Jo (Camilla Luddington) through her premature emergency C-section.
“Ben and Jo have a special relationship. He’s absolutely worried, and that’s exactly where the episode leaves us,” George explained, noting just how many friends reached out after the finale aired. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with people who adore Jo. I wouldn’t tell anyone to relax not about her.”
While the season opened with tragedy, George promised that the show will continue delivering the blend of drama and levity fans love.
“The rest of the season has a lot of fun,” he shared. “The writers did a brilliant job bringing in the new interns and weaving them into the larger story. You’ve got seasoned doctors who’ve grown into their lives, and newcomers still figuring out who they are.”
He added, “The interns are learning how to be doctors. Ben is learning and growing too sometimes doing both at the exact same time.”
George is excited for fans to witness how Ben continues to evolve this season. “It’s going to be interesting to watch Ben adapt that firefighter mentality he’s carried with him for so long is going to play a real role in how he grows,” he teased. “Anyone who loves Ben is going to have a good time watching where he ends up. By the time we hit the finale, it’s going to feel like a complete thumbs-up season.”
George first stepped into Ben Warren’s scrubs back in 2010, quickly becoming a fan favorite on Grey’s Anatomy before transitioning to Station 19. His full-time return to Grey’s in 2024 marked a major moment both for longtime viewers and for the actor himself.
“I was a fan of the show before I ever joined it. That’s rare for an actor,” George said, reflecting on his journey. “I’m excited to see what’s coming next. And honestly, I would never count out the writers. Any time you think you’ve figured out how they operate, they’ll surprise you. They’ll knock you down every time and somehow, you still come back wanting more.”
When season 22 launched in September, George was relieved to see that Ben wasn’t among the casualties of the deadly explosion. But Grey’s Anatomy being what it is, that relief didn’t last long.
“It’s a blessing and a curse that characters die on this show,” he admitted. “On one hand, as an actor, when you find a job you genuinely love, you want to stay as long as possible. But the flipside is that real stakes make the storytelling better. Anything can happen and that’s one of the reasons the show remains so good.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday, January 8, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and streams the following day on Hulu.
