One company from the Bay Area that builds “the first true flying car” is getting thousands of pre-orders for the car of the future, and they believe that they have made aviation history.
San Mateo, California-based Alef Aeronautics has come up with an all-electric flying car that can both drive on roads and fly in the air. The company claims that its Model A is the first car of its type that receive registration from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for test flights, thus a big step in the personal air mobility journey.
The futuristic silhouette is a body that is made of carbon fiber, and the rotating cabin that is unique to the car, thus enabling the car to go from driving mode to flight mode. While driving on the road, it behaves like a regular electric car, but in the air, it is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
Alef Aeronautics says Model A can cover 200 miles on the road and 110 miles in the air. The company is thrilled to announce that more than 2,500 people have already committed to purchasing the flying car by placing deposits of $150 for the “general queue” and $1,500 for priority access. The expected retail price is around $300,000, and the first deliveries are scheduled for late 2025.
Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef Aeronautics, celebrated the achievement of the new milestone by remarking, “This is a small step for planes, a giant step for cars.” He went on to say that the car is designed to work with the current infrastructure and hence, no special runways are needed.
Though flying cars have been a symbol of science fiction for a long time, Alef’s Model A is one of the most concrete ways to realize it. Nonetheless, before flying cars can be seen often in the sky, there are still regulations, safety, and infrastructure problems to solve.
The firm is also planning to launch an improved version, the Model Z, in 2035, which will offer a longer journey and come at a cheaper price.
As it is becoming clear that urban congestion and transportation efficiency are common problems and the need for addressing them is increasing, the undertaking to invent feasible flying cars is becoming more intense, with Alef Aeronautics at the helm of this emerging industry.
